One of the most influential voices of our time, Dr Maya Angelou.

A writer, poet, activist, actor, dancer, screenwriter the list goes on.


Known for her 1969 memoir, 'I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings', she has published seven autobiographies, three books of essays, several books of poetry, and is credited with a list of plays, movies, and television shows spanning over 50 years.


I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings captures the joy and pain of Maya's early years, with the guidance of her friend, the novelist James Baldwin. The book was banned in many schools at the time, due to Maya's honesty about having been sexually abused. An event that left her mute for several years from the age of 7.


One of the most important writers of the twentieth-century, Maya had an extraordinary life, rising from poverty, violence and racism, to become a renowned and respected fighting force.


Maya Angelou passed in May, 2014, at her home.
