Independent artist Bxnjamin personifies untouched, untainted hip hop soul. Like a best kept secret, his lyricism and production will make you an instant listener. Art is also a love of his, creativity is clearly his superpower.
Who inspired you to make music?
Growing up my favourite artists were Andre 3000, Blu, Musiq Soulchild and Common.
How would you describe the music that you typically create?
Lyrically my writing is mostly self-reflective, honest and poetic. It holds high personal value to me, and I use a lot of symbolism/references drawn from nature and my nostalgia.
What is your creative process?
I usually listen to beats to relax, and occasionally they force words out of me. I like to write short pieces usually about 2 verses long, once I have many of these I see which ones work together as full songs. I record/mix everything at home in my bedroom.
Who would you most like to collaborate with?
As Blu and Andre 3000 were my favourite rappers growing up it would be like a dream come true to ever work with either of them, but I’d also love to work with 9th wonder, DJ Premiere, and Little Dragon.
If you could open a show for any artist who would it be?
Hmm, I would love to open up a show for Nas.
What is that you like and dislike about being an independent artist?
While I love the freedom to create what I want and how I want, the only thing I would say I dislike, is the difficulty I have to draw attention to my work on a larger scale, that guess would come within the network of the industry.
