The last time I read a book cover to cover I must have been about 8 years old. I was (allegedly) an avid reader back then. Today, the closest thing I've dealt with is graphic novels/comic books, most of those were bought for the imagery, but I did discover some good writing too. What I have enjoyed reading is routed in "perceptions of reality". I'm less interested in people recounting facts or events than I am in how they think and why. I tend to lean more towards fantasy and sci-fi, which probably helped drive me into comic books.
I've got 2 or 3 crates of comics that I've not touched or looked at since the dawn of the millennium. I thought I'd pass them onto the kids. A lot of the material is a bit inappropriate, so not just yet!
